This route mixes the most charming places of Algeciras with the life and work of one of the most important flamenco artists in the world, the master Paco de Lucia.
C. San Francisco, 11203 Algeciras, Cádiz (Google Map)
At number 8 of this street, near the Fuente Nueva, Paco de Lucia was born in 1947. Here he spent the first 5 years of his life, later his family moved to La Bajadilla (Barcelona street), where he spent part of his childhood. At this time Paco began to give his first guitar lessons.
After leaving San Francisco street, we go up the new fountain, and leaving aside the Plaza de Andalucía, we enter the popular neighborhood of San Isidro, where we will stroll through its beautiful streets and stop for a while next to the church of Cristo de Medinaceli.
Our next stop will be at María Luisa Park, after passing through Sevilla Street, where we will contemplate its beauty.
In this street, located next to the Merinies ruins (archaeological complex of medieval walls), Paco de Lucia spent his childhood. At that time this street was full of bars, where wine and flamenco were mixed, known as tabancos.
Paco de Lucia in the album LUZIA, dedicated to his mother, composes some alegrías that bear the name of the street ammunition.
Before reaching the Plaza Alta we will stop for a while at Alfonso XI street, where the town hall of Algeciras is located, and we will hear the sound of Paco de Lucia’s guitar for a few moments.
We continue in the direction of the Plaza Alta, the nerve center of the city.
This is where Paco de Lucía spent most of his childhood.
The high square is formed by benches decorated with Sevillian tiles and in the middle of it is the fountain. Next to the high square we have the chapel of Europa, on one side and the Church of La Palma on the other. Continuing our tour we go down the Calle Real to our next meeting point, located in the Plaza de Abastos.
Here in this market, Paco’s father had a fabric stall, where he made a living as best he could. The stall was next to the Ingeniero Torroja building.
The Ingeniero Torroja market was built in 1935, with a dome without ribs or interior support, which was the largest in the world until 1965.
Our walking tour ends at the esplanade where the monument that the city of Algeciras pays tribute to Paco, this bronze sculpture was created by Nacho Falgueras in 1994, is located next to the port of Algeciras.
Here ends our walking tour, which will be complemented by a bus tour where we will go to the Punta Carnero Lighthouse, where Paco de Lucia was inspired to take the most important album of his artistic career, Entre dos aguas.
The Punta Carnero Lighthouse is a wonderful enclave, a passage of migratory birds, where you can see the bay of Algeciras with Gibraltar on one side and the African continent on the other, it is a place located between two waters.
